Intro to Travel Writing
Date and time to be announced

Do you want to be a travel writer? Who doesn’t? Travel writers get to gallivant to the most exotic corners of the earth while getting paid to write about it!

Travel writing is an extremely competitive field. It takes more than packing a bag and hopping on a plane to land the big travel writing contracts. How do you convince editors that you have something unique to say about a big city like San Francisco or something important to say about a small beach town like Outer Banks, North Carolina? How do you break in when you’ve got no travel writing experience to your name?

Two travel editors, including a community manager who hires new travel writers, will be leading this workshop. By the end of our conversation, you’ll be prepared to write some travel stories that editors cannot refuse and maybe even land a travel writing gig. Aspiring and beginning travel writers of all backgrounds are encouraged to attend.

Travel Photography 101
Date and time to be announced

Do you wish you could snap gorgeous photos to remember your travels? The kind that look like they belong in a book or magazine? Photographs are a great way to share your travel adventures with family and friends.

Travel photography is tricky, though. You need more than a camera and a zoom lens to get the perfect shot. It takes skill to know when to turn off your flash. It takes practice to capture animals in motion! It takes technical finesse to resize your photos so they look good on your friends’ computer screens.

In this workshop, award-winning travel photographer Joe McDaniel will answer all your photography questions. By the end of our conversation, you’ll be prepared to take beautiful travel photos that you’re proud to share online. Aspiring and beginning photographers of all backgrounds are encouraged to attend.

Travel Attraction Review Writing
Date and time to be announced

From Harrison’s Cave in Barbados and Balboa Park in San Diego, travel editors always need attraction reviews for their websites, magazines and newspapers. Finding and writing about a destination’s hidden treasures is a great way to break into travel writing.

Participants in this workshop will learn to write thrilling attraction reviews. Viscape Communications Director Dorothy Carlow will share tips on finding cool attractions to cover, brainstorming, keeping your review focused, and getting-and holding-readers’ attention. By the end of the workshop, you’ll be ready to write attraction reviews that catch editors’ eyes and inspire travelers.
