“Viscape” To Delaware’s Quaint Beach Town, Lewes Beach!
If you’ve been following My Sweet Viscape, you know we love to ride those waves. Ever since we gave you the low-down on Delaware’s Dewey Beach earlier this month, we haven’t stopped thinking about Dewey’s neighbor to the north, Lewes Beach. This charming town is a personal favorite of Viscape’s founders. It’s easy to see why.
With just 3,000 residents, Lewes offers the perfect “Viscape” from city life. Beach towns don’t get more quaint than Lewes, which is lined with colonial architecture dating back to 1631. Walk through downtown Lewes Beach or visit the Zwaanendael Museum and you may think you’ve entered the 17th century.
That is, until you hit Lewes’ golden dunes. Sitting where Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean meet, Lewes Beach is a hit among surfers, families, and horseshoe crabs. And for those seeking beautiful sunsets, great fishing, and some of the best whale- and dolphin-watching in the country, the Fisherman’s Warf is the place to be!
Lewes residents also enjoy some of the greenest hiking and biking trails around in Cape Henlopen State Park. And in the summer, when the mercury hovers below 80-yes, 80 degrees Fahrenheit!-locals bring out their blankets and listen to bluegrass, jazz, country, oldies, and even sing-alongs during Lewes’ Summer Music Concert Series. Some even feast on berries, fresh fish, and Artisanal cheeses they picked up at the local Farmers’ Market, the largest in Delaware.
It’s a wonder that Lewes hasn’t become a tourist trap like neighboring beaches. Whatever the explanation, this well-kept secret is the perfect place to rent or buy a vacation home! Here are some houses that are sure to make for a sweet “Viscape“:

With a large screened-in porch perfect for firefly watching and drinking a glass of pinot, this house has tons of flair. And with three master suites, it’s perfect for entertainers or families. Whoever stays with you will appreciate being able to walk into town or bike to the beach in five minutes.

Want to gaze at the bay every morning? The balcony of this fully furnished three-bedroom townhouse is the perfect place to do just that. And when you’re ready to hit the beach, you’re a two-minute walk away.

Love to grill? This fantastic four-bedroom, two-bathroom house has the perfect sundeck and porch for grilling freshly caught fish and watching the sunset. And with weekly rental options, it’s great for giving Lewes Beach a test run.
