Tore Steen at NFTE Gala on May 6We were able to speak with Tore Steen in-between his busy schedule of board meetings, writing a business plan, hitting the ski slopes and riding the wind and waves in his most recent athletic endeavor, kite surfing!  We managed to get a few answers to some of our most pressing questions from the dynamic and engaging Viscape CFO!

How did you become involved with Viscape?

I was giving a talk at an EO University event last summer in Las Vegas and that is where I met Caroline and Dan.  We had lunch together and I became intrigued by what they were doing with Viscape.

What was the subject of your talk?

My talk was on how to effectively use your network of people and how to create boards and advisors for your company.

What other business ventures have you been involved in?

Well, quit a few.  I built a 500 million dollar company from scratch.  We had operations in 16 countries including Asia, Europe and Latin America.  Running a NYSE company was fun.  I did a 2-3 turn around about two or three years ago and that was fun too.  I sit on the Board of Directors for Deckers Outdoor Corporation which owns UGG Australia, Teva and Simple footwear brands and that is very fun company to be involved with.

Why are you so confident that Viscape will succeed in the competitive Web 2.0 marketplace?

I think the first to market is always a tremendous advantage.  I feel when you have two passionate visionaries who are willing to put their own money into it – that always helps.  Viscape is first to market and that is always an advantage.

Do you haveTore and Mona Steen with Dan Engfer and Caroline Allison in Park City, Utah any words of wisdom for aspiring CEOs and CFOs?

I think there is only one real answer and that is to work harder and smarter than everyone else.  I have never found a substitute for working very hard.  You also have to have a vision and be able to execute that vision.  Sometimes just having a vision and strategy is not enough because you also need to be able to execute it right.

You work hard and play hard.  So what is your life motto?

Have fun.

Tore Steen is in Washington through the end of June and will be attending the Viscape’s Unofficial Launch Party.
